Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Colin Hughes had five points to lead the Lebanon Valley men's lacrosse team on Saturday in a tough 20-16 defeat at DeSales University.

The Dutchmen played the Bulldogs close all game with neither team able to gain more than a three-goal advantage until DSU scored five consecutive goals in the fourth quarter to take a five-goal lead. DeSales got off to a fast start with two goals in the first two minutes of play. The Dutchmen came right back, and Trey Ralston scored off an assist from Hayden Carling on LVC's first offensive possession of the game. Two minutes later Alex Kiviniemi tied the game up off another assist by Carling. The Bulldogs responded with three quick goals in a span of 22 seconds to take a 5-2 lead midway through the opening quarter. The Dutchmen fought back as Kiviniemi scored his second goal of the game with a little over four minutes on the clock off an assist from Jake Bollinger. Two minutes later Ethan Keenan cut the lead down to one with an unassisted goal. The Bulldogs were able to score with 1:13 left to take a 6-4 lead into the second quarter.

LVC used a strong first five minutes of the second quarter to tie the game up at seven. Carling started things off with an unassisted goal before DSU scored to make it 7-5. Keenan cut the lead in half with his second goal off a pass from Dylan Rinyak before Hughes tied things up with his first goal of the game. The Bulldogs stopped the run with a goal with 9:44 remaining in the half. Hughes retied the score as he tallied his second goal of the game three minutes later off another assist by Bollinger. DSU retook the lead before LVC scored twice to take their first lead of the game. Hughes finished off his hat trick with an unassisted goal to bring the game level before Kiviniemi found Ralston open for the go-ahead goal with two minutes to go in the half. The Bulldogs made the lead short-lived with the tying goal six seconds later. The Dutchmen had a great look to take a halftime lead, but Ralston's buzzer-beating shot was saved.

The teams traded goals to begin the third quarter starting with a goal for the hosts in the third minute of the period. The Dutchmen countered with a goal from Rowan Myers with Hughes picking up the assist. DeSales scored the next two goals to take a 13-11 lead with 10 minutes to go in the quarter. Neither team was able to score over the next four minutes until Ralston found the back of the net on a delayed penalty call. The Bulldogs were able to kill off two extra-man opportunities for the Dutchmen. They added two goals in the final three minutes of the quarter to take a 15-12 advantage into the final 15 minutes.

Bollinger started the scoring off in the fourth quarter with an unassisted goal to cut the lead to two. DSU responded with the next five goals over a span of eight minutes to extend their lead to 20-13 with 4:25 remaining. LVC fought back and Hughes scored two minutes later off another assist from Rinyak. The Dutchmen scored twice in the final minute to set the final score. Kiviniemi scored with 23 seconds to go off an assist by Carling and then Bollinger capped off the scoring with nine second left.

  • Hughes recorded his third four-goal game of the year while taking five shots. He also picked up two ground balls.
  • Carling had a career-high three assists and scored his eighth goal of the year.
  • Kiviniemi finished with four points on three goals and an assist. The midfielder recorded his fourth hat trick of the season.

  • Ralston had a hat trick with three goals and two ground balls.
