Abstract
Chapter 6 explains how providers address the risks of their work by creating security protocols to protect themselves. Most workers identified that preventing problem clients was the best way to keep themselves safe. Providers often discussed that they cannot rely on traditional social resources like police, and only have themselves to rely on for their safety. The most common way was to screen clients before seeing them. Screening comes in a variety of styles, including personal referrals from other workers, Internet membership sites that offer profiles with information on users, and digital sleuthing, where workers personally look into a prospective client’s employment, relationship status, and previous behavior. Ultimately, workers acknowledged that each provider has to assess safety for themselves and that racial and class privileges played a crucial role in that calculation.
